Blood, sweat, a flat tire, but another win at XTERRA Alabama 2008
Howdy folks
Amber and I are on the road at the moment, traveling from Pelham (where we raced XTERRA Alabama yesterday) to Richmond. (XTERRA Virginia coming sunday) To break up the 12 hr drive, we decided to spend the night in a budget hotel to rest our aching legs and get some sleep. The 1st budget hotel we stopped at was so scary/smelly/dirty, I went and asked for a refund once we saw the room. There were doods drinking out of paper wrapped containers while staring at our shiny bike laden rental car, the stairs and halls smelled like urine, cigarette butts were everywhere and the room smelled like baked….. So I went back and said we didnt like the view, we’d like a refund. So now we are staying in this nice hotel. The room even came with its own butler….
For our butlers’ swim lesson:
So thats why I have’nt had time or images or internet to put a decent race report together. In the meanwhile, please follow the link to the race report and view the picture show on XTERRA Planet:

Happenings in a nut shell:
– I had a big lead on the technical bike.
– I cut the rear tire on some rocks about halfway through the bike.
– I put a tube in.
– I rode like a beast.
– I caught the leaders again just as the run started.
– I missed some aid stations.
– I was hot.
– I was tired.
– Then Dan Hugo chased me up and down those terrible hills
– They said I just hung on for the win.
– But I wouldnt know, because next thing I was in the medical tent, swimming in ice, already on my 2nd (of 3) IVs.
Yes, I was lucky… See the tube peek through the tire. Unaware of pending disaster, I hammered all of Blood Rock and the rest of the gnarly course with a patch of tube sticking out!
The womens racing is very exciting and close this year. Amber improved a lot since last year (she even rode Blood Rock!) and got another close 5th, only 1min40 down from 2nd.
Read Ambers’ post. It’s more informative and less gross than mine…

Amazing performance you crafty troglodyte. Is there any better statement to deliver a crushing blow to the competition? I suspect it will take more than that to shake that young gun off your tail. This is shaping up to be an exciting season, I just wish I could see more of it. Also, my bike needs some work and I was hoping you might take it for a spin. I figure with proper motivation you could replace the bottom bracket in under three minutes.
Nice work pulling out that win with the flat tire.
I am nervously waiting till Friday when I drive back down to my hometown of Richmond for Sundays Race
This year my goal is to be less than your time doubled ?
Have you seen all the work that the local MTB club has done in Richmond?
Haai Conrad!
As an X-Terra newcomer, i am blown away by the stuff you pull out of the bag..
Good luck for the rest of your season!
