in memory of my dad
My dad and my hero passed away after a long battle with cancer.
Liezel and I are flying home on Sunday for his funeral.
Words fail me.
Here are some fond memories…
Braai lessons on a hiking trip- a skill every South African boy must have. (BBQ)
Our bike trip after he beat cancer for the 1st time.
“He had to bribe Liezel to marry me” was their joke. We’re so happy he was there for the moment, even though he was really sick
My parents lived an amazing life
Victory and fun at XTERRA Knysna, South Africa
Just a quick post to celebrate the unhacking of my website- will blog more extensively soon.
Had a lot of fun at XTERRA Knysna and the Oyster Fesitival. Knysna is a stunning place, and after 20 years of endless summer, I saw that this kind of winter I can live with if I really have to- a week of 24C and sunny after a few days rain.
Lieuwe Boonstra 3rd (in his last pro race on SA soil), 1x Caveman (in now khaki kit), MTB ace Kevin Evans 2nd. Yes, Oakley did clean up!
Thanks to Fanus from Oakpics.com for the pix.
Liezel and I also did the Waterfront Rush for laughs. Here is a sneak peek…
Liezel and I dropping in. I’m not a big fan of heights and almost dropped into my pants…
Trying not to laugh at Liezel tipped over
It all ended well- No one drowned, but rock climbing is for monkeys…
Balega socks at Fleet Feet Burlington
Just like at XTERRA Coeur D’Alene and XTERRA Richmond, my friends from Balega (new website) came out to help spread the Balega and Fleet Feet specialty sport store love to the local community.
We usually have a meet and greet at the local Fleet Feet. (Even rhymes!) We smile knowingly when people rave about the best socks they have ever worn, I sign some posters, take a few pictures with athletes and their families, but mostly people ooh and aah at my foot. (this time anyway)
Doug from Fleet Feet Burlington manning the door.
Rob Zellmer from Balega (also the sister company Doctor Specified) took me to the traditional post Fleet Feet dinner. We tasted the local brews (this one is a “Beetroot Wacko”) and although Rob was warned about my appetite by Chris and Carol but he was still shocked when I had 2 main courses…
The making of a video. For www.i-am-specialized.com
This video was made for the “triathlon” part of the i-am-specialized website.
The a href=”http://www.i-am-specialized.com/triathlon” target=”_blank”>i-am-specialized website is aimed at being the public’s way of following Specialized riders’ racing and stories online. It is a new site and will mostly aim at internet video content. Internet video is the new TV.
I am honoured to be the 1st triathlete to have a video on the site.
Terrenzo and Macca will have videos soon…
The shoot started with swimming.
Bobby Behan – our Marketing Manager (and a few other things) used to be a pro triathlete himself, (we lived and trained together in Stellenbosch in 2000) so he knew exactly what needed to go into this movie. He sat in the director chair for 2 days.
Aaron Vogel just realized his dream job by becoming Specialized’s first in-house videographer. He says it wasnt really his dream job- he couldnt dream of a job where he could ride bikes and make movies AND get paid for it!
Anyway, Bobby decided we’ll kick off with swimming. And posing. Lots and lots of posing. I hate posing, but it was one of the many things I learnt about acting that fateful day….
Posing to da max. Oh yes, on the speedo issue- I’m old school (ie started racing tri in the late 80s) so I wear a speedo. End of story. At least its not lime green or pink. Like it was in
