Victory and fun at XTERRA Knysna, South Africa
Just a quick post to celebrate the unhacking of my website- will blog more extensively soon.
Had a lot of fun at XTERRA Knysna and the Oyster Fesitival. Knysna is a stunning place, and after 20 years of endless summer, I saw that this kind of winter I can live with if I really have to- a week of 24C and sunny after a few days rain.
Lieuwe Boonstra 3rd (in his last pro race on SA soil), 1x Caveman (in now khaki kit), MTB ace Kevin Evans 2nd. Yes, Oakley did clean up!
Thanks to Fanus from Oakpics.com for the pix.
Liezel and I also did the Waterfront Rush for laughs. Here is a sneak peek…
Liezel and I dropping in. I’m not a big fan of heights and almost dropped into my pants…
Trying not to laugh at Liezel tipped over
It all ended well- No one drowned, but rock climbing is for monkeys…
Caveman takes 40th XTERRA win at Alabama

[May 22, 2011 (Pelham, AL) – The best off-road triathletes in the world – South Africa’s Conrad Stoltz and Canada’s Melanie McQuaid – won the XTERRA Southeast Championship on arguably the best off-road triathlon course in the world at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama today.
“This place is amazing, and I know I speak for all of us when I say we love it here,” said Stoltz. “It’s a true XTERRA course with a nice warm water swim in a beautiful lake, a real mountain bikers course with climbing, technical sections, and fun corners, and a tough but scenic run. This really is my favorite course.”
It’s Stoltz fifth straight win in Shelby County, third straight on this year’s America Tour, and 40th career XTERRA championship victory.
“Impressive, isn’t it,” said Dan Hugo, 25, who finished in second place just 19 seconds behind his fellow countryman to make it a 1-2 showing for Stellenbosch, South Africa. “You must give credit where credit is due, and what Conrad did today was impressive. When he needs to produce a good swim, he does. When he needs a strong run, he delivers. He doesn’t make mistakes on the bike. He’s seemingly flawless. I guess 20 years of experience will do that for you.”
Caveman wins XTERRA Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz, California (just south of San Fancisco) is wacky, its trendy and its also know as “Surf City”. And the place where Specialized test rides bikes and equipment.
I love ocean swims, and even the supposed 53F water (11C- although it felt warmer) did not put me off.
Cant believe its XTERRA Waco time again
Last years’ XTERRA Waco winners. Cowboy Caveman and Renata Bucher 1st big win in the USA the Series. Check out last years fun blog here.
What a great sporting community here in Waco, Texas! The people are amazing. Waco is a perfect XTERRA venue. The course is very technical yet fun, its right down town the locals are really behind it. Texas is quite a sporty state- so we expect a lot of people from Dallas and Austin coming to check out XTERRA.
Fellow Specialized rider Melanie McQuaid and I did a 3hr clinic and meet and greet at Bicycles Outback last night. A great cycling store immersed in culture, and legendary wrench wrangler Ian Moore fine tuned my S works Specialized Epic 29er for these particular conditions.
Where the fun begins. Words cannot explain the complexity and fun-nes of this XTERRA Waco course. Its probably 95% single
XTERRA World Champs 2010- Race report
I have never felt so emotional at a finish line before.
To understand the significance of this win, you have to walk the last 10 XTERRA Worlds years in my shoes:
My 1st win in 2001 was really a life changing experience– Not only did I discover and win this amazing XTERRA thing on a beautiful Hawaiian island, but I became a real, professional triathlete. Ned Overend liked what he saw during the season and gave me a brand new Specialized dual suspension bike the week before Worlds- FOR FREE ek se^! No more borrowing bikes! Overnight, I actually made money from the sport. Good money. (in my eyes anyway) It was my 10th season as a pro, but I still lived pretty much hand to mouth up until then. (Lived with my parents while in South Africa, drove my dads old Cressida etc) But the day after the race I signed with an agent (Scott Fairchild) and within weeks the space on my kit was sold out. (In fact, they asked me to wear jammers instead of speedos, “because we’ll have more space to sell.” I think they were just relieved to get me out of Speedos…
