Conrad Stoltz’s Fatbike beach riding Adventure – video
I LOVE adventure! Which, after a few laps too many around the athletics track, is what drew me to triathlon at age 14. Two decades later, that same “Adventure” also drew me to XTERRA.
This video is about me (Conrad Stoltz aka The Caveman) taking my FatBoy on a beach Adventure along the South African South Coast. (Brenton-on-Sea to Sedgefield and back- 53km in 5h10)
Stunning scenery, challenging coastal terrain, the rising tide (nearly got swept out to sea) and riding & crashing off a dune because of darkness… Plenty of adventure!
The ride was made possible by the amazingly capable Specialized Fatboy Pro: A Fatbike with 4.6inch (12cm) wide tyres, ridden at super low pressure, which allows you to ride terrain never thought ride-able. Tyre pressure: 6-12psi (0.4 -.08bar) depending if its firm or soft beach sand.
The ride is recorded on my GPS enabled SUUNTO Ambit3. Check out my “big ride, incl 120min at Tempo” ride details and flyover movie on Movescount: http://www.movescount.com/moves/move6…
If you wonder about sand and rust: – Squirt lube keeps the chain clean and almost completely sand free – a feat achieved by being petroleum free. Unlike the other brands.
After each salty, sandy ride, I wash the bike thoroughly, let it dry and then layer the few parts which can rust, with Squirt lube.
Stay tuned for more Caveman Adventures!

The Greyton Classic weekend.
The Oaks Estate. The setting for the Greyton Classic MTB race is quite idyllic, when it comes to scenery and ambiance. Central to the race is the Ehlers family, who owns and runs the wedding venue and working farm, which is centered around their beautifully restored Cape Dutch farmstead. Gert’s Nguni cattle roam the hills and Liezel and I picked Pink Lady apples till our pockets (and cheeks) bulged.
The Greyton Classic event has been running for 8 years now, and is Greyton’s largest event of any kind of the year. Riders, runners and duathletes could choose from a number of distances and routes. Racing

Caveman MTB Skill clinics – Pretoria
Caveman hits Pretoria on June 20 & 21.
Build FREE SPEED!
No matter how fast (or slow) you are, I teach basic MTB skills. (I still practice them myself) The more you practice these skills, the sooner you will: Ride faster, ride safer, ride hairier trails, have more fun!
What to expect: This is about learning, not about “jaag-ing” till everyone is dropped and/or bleeding. We cultivate a low pressure, low key, relaxed atmosphere where you can best learn the basic skills in a safe environment. We spend most of our time on a smooth, flat surface. (ok, I may place soft obstacles in your way) Once you have a good handle on the skills, we break for drinks & snacks before we hit the trails & apply what we learned. We start with easy trails, we ride stop & go, so I can demonstrate and watch you convert “parking lot skills” to the trail. (For the Karate Kid fans, think: “Wax on, wax off, paint the fence etc” before you can kick ass)
You dont need to be super fit or tapered and carbo loaded. That said, I cater to the needs of the group, which is why its even better if we can fill the class with your riding friends. (Once or twice the ride has spiraled into a bit of a overtime smash-fest with silly grins at the end…)
You dont need to be in much of a shape to learn, BUT your bike needs to be in perfect working condition!
If you have knee pads, bring them. This is not a crash-fest, but somehow we just ride better with them on.

Caveman interview with TRS Radio
Caveman talks hunting & gathering on TRS radio.
When this was recorded, IM Kona, Oct 2014, @TheRealStarky was a only parody twitter account, and “The Real Starky” was still under cover. Being quite controversial and loose mouthed on twitter, it was intimidating sitting down for a podcast with TRS. However, once we met over beers, “Ben” turned out to be a baby faced nice guy, but also seriously sharp and curious. a “Sheep in wolves clothes” I called him. Dark Mark was a little shy, but I think we both had a bit of a man crush on each other. See, the humorous @_Dark_Mark twitter feed is my favourite toilet reading material.
Without further ado, here’s the interview:
“A long talk with a legend. Conrad sat down with us at the Huub house in Kona and talked to about his career, killing a baboon with his bare hands and eating road kill. Listen in on as Dark Mark and The Real Starky get to know this triathlon legend while consuming about a dozen beers. Conrad might be the most interesting man in the sport. Enjoy!”
