XTERRA Midwest. Battle Creek, Michigan
Winning smile & story time. During a week like this, so many things happen, its impossible to keep track of it all. I’ll try to give some perspective here.
My new race kit is officially here. It arrived from Hong Kong on Friday. My mate Gary Mandy hooked me up sweet with LUMA kit. I have a white kit, a black one and a red one (pictured) to chose from. And cycling gear

I had a good season opener, despite a few hic- ups on the bike. (a small crash and a twisted chain)
Josiah Middaugh from Colorado had a 1.15 lead after a phenomenal bike, but to my surprise I slowly reeled him in on the 1st (of 2) super hilly run laps. On the 2nd we dueled head to head, and with 2k to go I attacked and got a little gap on Josiah. I told him afterward if he had worn the Avia AVI Stoltz racing shoes, he would have won…
Specialized tire testing camp in Stellenbosch
Burry Stander doing rolling resistance testing on the rollers. He rode at 25km/h and at 35km/h with about 20 different tires and measured the wattage needed to hold those speeds for each tire. On the right (reading the power tap numbers) is Benno Willeit, our Specialized mechanic, and on the left is Tire Specialist Frank Stacey.
Nikola Tosic- The Serb behind the blogging
Here is a screen shot of Nikola Tosic, (on the right) “Cooling or dieing” and the Caveman blog he made. I posted the screen shot because I couldn’t figure out how to get the pic of him being cool (or dieing?). It turns out to be quite an interesting touch, I think. Sort of “a look into the Caveman’s desktop.” Notice the “Canadian visa South African” in the Google search box.
Nikola has taught me everything I know about blogging. Ok, its not much. How about “Nikola can teach me everything I ever want to know about blogging!”
He started and runs Nekada triathlon team which is basically a few hand selected triathletes (including Dan Hugo) from around the world, teaching us to how to blog, build brands and use the internet to optimize athletes’ exposure on the World Wide Web.
Nikola races Ironman, spends a few months in South Africa every year to escape the Serbian winter.
A seriously interesting character, (see tosic.com or any of his other 15 websites) he says it like it is, writes poetry, thinks outside of the box, likes art, design and especially arguing…
York Timbers Sabie Experience mountain bike race. 2008
I just got back on the farm after riding 3 of the 4 days of Sabie Experience. Sabie is only 80km from our farm and when my good friend (and Specialized Factory team damager) Bobby Behan said we were invited to ride, we couldnt say no. Despite still being in the midst of “ice cream and beer season”.
Turns out were were guests of Ian van der Walt and his newly formed DCM racing team. What a fun group of characters. After 3 days of hanging with these guys my voice box hurt more than my legs. Not they they are slow – its just that the amount and intensity of chatting, cajoling and prank playing was significant.
