Usually, this is the kind of scenery you’d expect…
Rest day fun activity- Caveman style
When it snows outside, you have to stay sane somehow!
For the past 11 years, Friday is my day off. Usually I’m quite broken by then and I’ll be dragging most of Friday- till energy slowly returns in the late afternoon. I try to use the rest day to catch up on admin, get a massage, run errands, work on my bike, dress normally (ie not lycra) and importantly- do something really fun. Like taking the new puppy (KTM 450 exc) for a spin in the snow!
Of course I justify it as “skills training…” I found the dirt bike makes you concentrate 110% all the time. If you dont- you’ll get really hurt, really quickly. I treat this thing with more respect than a loaded gun. With XTERRA racing, you only have to concentrate (even with lactate coming out of your ears) during parts of the race. Single track, technical run sections, turn buoys in the swim… The rest of the time you just take the hurt while your brain freewheels. Mine anyway.
Apart from the mental training it really makes me feel alive. My cousin Johan has a KTM 360 – a gnarly 2 stroke beast- and Johan is only 130lbs and cant reach the ground! He did his PhD on blood parasites on reptiles- (ie catching snakes all day) a hard job. When he gets frustrated, he takes his KTM out and thrashes it- even if its just up and down the track – and comes back with a big smile and pressing with his forefinger on his chest, say: “it feels like my “refresh button” has been pressed!”
Ice Head pressing his “refresh button…”
A fun weekend’s dirt bike riding!
I built a short Enduro track through a stream and some dongas on our farm. My mate Werner came over for the day and we rode till dark. Serious fun and hard work! I finished my long run 1st thing in the morning and had the day free for fun “XTERRA training”…
This was my last real riding opportunity as I leave for the USA XTERRA season on Friday. (20 March)
We started in groups of 4. I’m on the red and black Honda. (Yes, the guy in the back!) The guy next to me on the far right, Willie “die Lem” (The Blade) won, and I finished 2nd. The guy on his back wheel crashed about half way through while in 2nd. He had a 2 inch thorn in the back of his hand- not sure if that’s CAUSED the crash or if it was BECAUSE of the crash.
I did my 1st Enduro dirt bike race today. Wow, what an experience! I grew op riding dirt bikes on our farm, but when I turned 16, and became really serious about triathlon, I sold the bike. (Also needed the money to buy a “faster” bicycle.) So the last 18 years I told myself “the day I retire from triathlon racing, I’ll buy a dirt bike again. But last year, after winning Xterra World champs, I thought: “Screw it, I cant wait anymore! You only live once.” I bought the perfect bike: a 2005 Honda CRF 450 X. The previous owner rode it a few times, crashed really hard, got scared and became a motivated seller….
My last week in heaven
It is my last week on the farm, (before moving to Stellenbosch for serious training) so I’m trying to make the most of the special things I will have to forgo during the racing season.
After my 1h30 long run at 1900m altitude on Sunday, I took the long way home. Via the 2006 Toyota 400 Rally route. (I ride my dirt bike to and from my weekly high altitude long run)
The Caveman has landed! The Highveld is stunning this time of the year. We have had a lot of rain, and small fountains are springing up everywhere.
